Hi,
School has started back and in honor of this special time I have compiled my top seven favorite rock and roll songs about school. Here they are in no particular order.
"Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd
"Be Chrool to Your Scuel" by Twisted Sister
"Be True to Your School" by the Beach Boys
"Brain Damage" by Eminem (from The Slim Shady LP)
"Git Up, Git Out" By OutKast
"I Hated School" by The Wretched Ones
"Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon
Now it is hard to argue with me about Pink Floyd I think. I am pretty sure that Dee Snider must not have finished school since he does not know how to spell Cruel or School. Eminem might know something about brain damage. Something tells me that the teachers of The Wretched Ones might not have liked them either. And I glad that Paul Simon hung out with Julio before he met Garfunkel. Me and Julio sounds way better than me and Garfunkel down at the school yard. Anyway, scuel has started and it is time for all of us to get back in the swing of things, especially here at the church.
By the way, one of my favorite groups from my past is AMERICA. I love their song, "A Horse with No Name". But in the words of a comedian I heard on tv once. IF YOU ARE STUCK IN THE DESERT FOR SO LONG, WHY DON'T YOU NAME THE STUPID HORSE? Anyway, back to the new school year.
We kicked off the year with Promotion Sunday last week and it was great. We have the best SS teachers anywhere and you need to make sure that your youth is a part of Sunday School. MYF is a time for food and fellowship and fun and small groups where our youth talk about important faith issues. Fat Tuesday is at the Refuge and is crazy. We have weekly Bible studies, special events, weekend retreats, monthly service opportunities and more.
The reason I picked a music theme this week is to highlight and promote our BACK TO SCHOOLOOZA this Sunday night at the REFUGE. This has become almost an annual event at the end of summer. Mark Bogart is getting the band back together and there is no one better. They will be playing both classic rock and roll and more current songs that you will love. We will have amazing food and your youth will get to order a smoothie from our new (we hope) smoothie machine. It is from 6-8 and there will be a three dollar charge for food. Smoothies are only two dollars. If you want to come and enjoy some great music and "help" out a bit, you can come too.
Our very important pretty much required BACK TO CHURCH NIGHT FOR PARENTS will be on Sunday night, September 12th in Wesley Hall here at the church. It will be from 6:00 to 7:00. We had a great turnout last year and I hope you can be here this year. I will share with you a little about what we try to do and how we need you in order to make things better. More importantly you will have the opportunity to sign up to help make those things happen, including Pumpkins. They are coming October 2nd .
See you Sunday,
Steve
p.s. As you might have heard, Rob Bogart has left our staff to become the Associate Youth Director at St. Paul's UMC here in the city. We hate to see him go, but know that this opportunity will allow him to grow in ministry even more. We will miss Rob but we know that he is not going too far away. We wish him the best of luck and Godspeed in this new place. Kelly Cragg, who was serving with Rob in an internship this past year, will stay and will assume the Refuge Kitchen Manager position full time. Kelly is a long time favorite of our kids and our staff and we are most pleased to be able to have her stay with our program.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
