Scripture Reading
And He took
bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it
to them, saying, "This is My body given for
you; do this in remembrance of Me."
- Luke 22:19
Thought of the Day
A couple of
weeks ago I was on a retreat with a bunch of
our kids. It was a conference event so there
were over four hundred youth there from all
over Texas. It was a great weekend. The
speakers and band were excellent. The hang
out time was awesome. The weather was
spectacular. The food was somewhat
prison-like. (Not that I would know.)
Overall it was a good weekend. The one
positive thing about the food is that is
helped me stay on my never-ending diet.
On Saturday
night we had a worship service with Holy
Communion. Wayne, our speaker and musician
did a great job of setting the mood and his
words and music led right up to communion.
Meredith, a young minister in the conference
presided over the elements and reminded us
why we still partake of the bread and the
wine (OK, it was really grape juice; we are
United Methodist you know.) She talked about
when Jesus and His disciples gathered in that
upper room that night a long time ago. How
He held up the bread and the wine and offered
thanks to God. And then how Jesus gave it to
the disciples to eat and drink and said to
"remember Him" when they did. Meredith then
told us about the word remember. She broke
the word remember down for us. Re is a
prefix meaning "back to the original place,
or again". Member is to be a part of
something. So when Jesus tells us to
remember Him, He is calling us to come back
to be a part of Him. To return to a place
with Him. To come back home. To remind us
that we are His. To affirm to us that we
are His.
As I took
communion that night, it had even more
special meaning to me. I remembered that
Jesus was a part of me and I was a part of
Him. That is a great feeling. So I will
say to you to remember that God loves you and
to remember that God calls us to come back to
our beginnings, our origins with Him.
Remember that and never forget it.
Prayer
Lord, I am Yours and You are mine. I will
remember You. Amen.
