Scripture Reading
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me - a prayer to the God of my life.
- Psalm 42:8
Thought of the Day
This past April I was in Washington, D.C. for a conference and had a little time to kill after my flight landed. As I was leaving the airport in my rental car, I noticed signs that showed the way to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. Being an old political science major in college I decided to go and make the tour. Mount Vernon is amazing. It was quite interesting to see such a historic place. Of course, I had to go through the gift shop and snack bar. I am not sure but I do not think that they were there back in George's day even though the store clerks were dressed funny. I did enjoy spending time in the book store. I found a great little book that included Washington's prayer journal from when he was twenty years old.
As we approach the 4th of July I thought it would be good for us to read some of Washington's words of faith and prayer.
Let me live according to those holy rules which thou hast this day prescribed in thy holy word; make me to know what is acceptable in thy holy word; make me to know what is acceptable in thy sight, and therein to delight, open the eyes of my understanding, and help me thoroughly to examine myself concerning my knowledge, faith and repentance, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object Jesus Christ the way, the truth and the life, bless O Lord, all the people of this land, from the highest to the lowest, particularly those whom thou has appointed to rule over us in church & state, continue thy goodness to me this night. These weak petitions I humbly implore thee to hear accept and answer for the sake of thy Dear Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
Let us make George Washington's words our words this week and every week.
Prayer
Lord, open the eyes of my understanding of Your will and way. Amen.
